Adult Basic Education Classes

What is it?

The Black Hawk Center offers individualized adult basic education tutoring in various subject areas such as: reading, writing and spelling, math, counting and using money, and basic computer skills.

The program helps people by allowing them to work on foundational academic skills that need improvement before moving on to higher education.

Who?

People who are referred to the program through the Hawkeye Community College or the HCC Metro Center. People with disabilities and CIL consumers who make a request for services in this area as a part of their independent living plan are also welcome.

If we find that this program does not meet your needs (for example, if your ability and learning level is higher than what the curriculum provides for) then another referral may be made to an agency that is more appropriate for your needs.

Where?

This program is held at the CIL office and taught by Mike Van Gorder.

The curriculum and educational materials are provided by the HCC Metro Center.

What Will I Learn About?

You will learn the fundamentals and the foundational academic skills in various subject areas. You will first be tested in order for us to determine your ability and learning level.

The curriculum is individualized to a consumer's ability and learning level. Most curriculum is at the elementary school level (Grades K-6)

What's it Cost?

Nothing! -- It's Free!
