Black Hawk Center Cooking Class

What is it?
Cooking Class is a program for people with disabilities who want to learn how cook.
The program shows people how to use the appliances in the kitchen and adaptive cooking utensils. They learn how to use the stove, oven, and microwave.
Consumers are guided as they learn how to buy the food they need for the meal, how to prepare and mix ingredients, and how to cook the meal. They learn how use a cookbook, read a recipe, and follow the steps and directions in cooking. Consumers are shown how to keep a sanitary cooking area: washing dishes, cleaning the table, etc. They are also taught safe and healthy cooking practices. Eating healthy and learning about nutrition is also a part of the class.
Classes are small (limited to four or five people) with individualized attention from staff. Recipes and topics are geared to the consumer's ability level. Meals in the nutrition class are generally healthy and nutritious. Meals are oftentimes chosen by the consumer and many dishes are limited in the number of ingredients to enhance the ease of cooking and to facilitate the consumer's understanding.
Who?
